Dear Mom, …ahh… I am fine. How are you? – Everyone has to write home…
Dear Mom,
Sorry I haven’t communicated sooner, but I know you don’t like the HyperCom and prefer old fashioned email. I have been so busy since the war ended! I’ve just time for a quick note to let you know I’m alright. I know you knew I was alive and well because my picture has been everywhere on the HyperWave. It seems endless, both from Earth and here on Delvim. I know some of what’s been in the News Blogs is awful, but most of it isn’t true. I can’t take time to tell everything now but I’ll sort of outline what happened. Sorry if it’s a bit disjointed, and please don’t be too shocked or frightened by all of this, I am perfectly OK, now.
It was totally by accident that I became humankind’s expert on The Delvimium then the ‘First Ambassador of Peace to the Delvim Home World’. Accidental, because you see, I was killed in the ‘Micro-War’ between The Delvimium, Earth and the Tropar. (Don’t worry, it worked out great!) We humans were on the wrong side but we didn’t know it. The Tropar had us wrapped around their micro-manipulators and about to commit an atrocity for them. They had us poised to try to wipe out The Delvimium and get the He– (Navy talk, sorry!) beat out of ourselves trying. Then, the Tropar thought that they would be able to take both Earth and Delvim without much cost to them. It must have been quite a surprise to the Tropar when the Combined Delvim/Earth Fleet materialized in Space surrounding Tropa and demanded unconditional surrender!
I wasn’t with the fleet. I was here on Delvim when the war ended. You knew I was posted to the WarStar ‘New Quebec’ as a Citizen-Observer. What you didn’t know was that I had been chosen to be the exchange observer on the Tropar Lead Destroyer ‘Renprn’. The third week of the war, ‘Renprn’ was sent to Tropa to bring back Secret Dispatches for The Tropar Fleet Leader which they didn’t want to trust to HyperCom. On the way back, we were intercepted by a Delvim Cruisraider (Sorry! More navy words…and messy facts!). We took a needle-torp in the turret above the control room which blew the ship in half and killed everyone in the Control Room. I was cut almost in half by a cover plate. The compartment was open to space but The Delvimium threw a Stasis Field on the forward part of the ship and that’s why I’m still here, well, here again anyway. (You probably don’t know what a Stasis Field is and I don’t either, but it’s supposed to almost stop time inside the field and somehow that’s why they could fix some of us when we got to Delvim.) They shipped our blown apart hulk back to Delvim in the hold of a combat freighter and began to work through the mess. They found and “re-vitalized” three of the Tropar. When they found out what the dispatches might contain and that they might still be on board intact, they moved the whole thing out of orbit to an underground base on Delvim. Shortly after that they discovered me. They were totally unprepared to find a human on that ship! Up to the beginning of the war they had not known of our existence, just as we did not know about them. I was the first human they had ever actually seen!
I know this is weird, but… The Delvimium say I was ‘legally’ dead when they took me out of Stasis in the Control Room of the “Renprn”. I was then “re-vitalized” (I’ll explain). I guess there is some interesting legal issue with them about me having been brought onto Delvim “Dead” and then ‘re-vitalized’ on the planet. It turns out that’s why I’m a ‘Native Delvim Citizen’. The Delvimium explained all of this to me much later.
